I am a big fan of any book written by Jacques Philippe - unfortunately I don't think that many of his books have been translated into English. That said, at least you can find Time for God: A Guide to Prayer in English - and this book is a keeper.I am not the type to rant and rave about a book, but this is simply one of the most refreshing books I've ever read on prayer. If you are serious about your prayer life, well this book - written in an easy-to-read, practical style - is for you.
For those unfamiliar with Jacques Philippe, he is a member of the Community of the Beatitudes, where he is also responsible for the guidance of priests and seminary students, as well as the formation of pastors and providing spiritual direction. He has been a priest since 1985, and he preaches retreats in France and abroad.
Still not convinced about this book? From another review, there is this bit of information:
Many people today long for something more ; we thirst for God and a deeper spirituality, but aren’t sure how to get there or even where to begin.
Spiritual masters have always believed that prayer is crucial in our relationship with God, but many of us feel unsure about beginning to pray; or easily abandon prayer when the going gets rough.
Time for God is a guide to making room for prayer in our daily lives and sticking with it—an indispensable primer for developing a Christian spirituality for the long haul.
Time for God i ncludes sections on the importance of prayer, making prayer times meaningful, the development of one’s prayer life, conditions and methods of prayer. It offers simple, specific guidance and advice—completely accessible!
Also includes: Appendix I: Method for meditation as proposed by Fr. Francis Libermann, Founder of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, and Appendix II: Letter of Brother Lawrence of the Resurrection (1614–1691), author of the classic The Practice of the Presence of God, on living in God’s presence.
Wonderful jumping-off point for individuals who want to explore prayer, but aren’t sure how to begin. Great resource for parish prayer groups. Perfect retreat companion.
