Here is an interesting news item that ran last year ahead of the hype for The DaVinci Code that is actually quite interesting as it discusses mortification, as well as a funny scene where a fellow hits one of the CNN "talking heads" with the discipline.
Anyway, if you are interested in Opus Dei and have only heard the rumors of "brutal beatings" and hush-hush secrecy, this video is a good place to start on the road toward a true fair-and-balanced look (to quote a certain news agency).
